Headsets can either be cheap and nasty or decadent with a R1,000+ price tag but on the rare occasion you find a headset that is relatively well priced and manages to tick a lot of boxes. The Steelseries 4H is one of these, being very similar to the Steelseries 5H v2. The ear cups are large and surround the ear without delivering too much pressure. This allows for gaming session that last for hours without discomfort.
Inside each of those ear-loving cups sits a single 40mm driver which comes very close to delivering an experience like that of the 5H v2. The bass is solid but not brain melting with mid-range frequencies being well represented. However there is some bleeding between the low and mid-range with the latter lacking in definition. High frequencies have suffered with the cost cutting and there is a noticeable limit to the range of the drivers in this regard especially when compared to the 5H v2. In games bullets, explosions and footsteps are all delivered with an immersive quality and the minor failings of these cans are easily forgotten.
Just like the 5H v2 the microphone on the 4H recedes into the left ear cup. The microphone can be extended so that it sits very close to the mouth and can be angled so that it sits as close to or as far from the users mouth as is desired. The biggest issue with the 4H is its short cable. The cable is only 1.8m long which can be a bit frustrating if your case lacks front audio ports. Furthermore the cable is not braided so care needs to be taken. The 4H possesses the same in-line volume control as the 5H v2 which allows quick control over the volume of not only the headphones but also the microphone as well as muting the latter when needed.
So the 4H is not perfect but you can hardly expect perfection when the asking price is under R400. The Steelseries 4H headset is comfortable, delivers an acceptable audio experience and manages not to strain the wallet to breaking point. If the thought of spending more than R500 on a headset seems insane then the Steelseries 4H should be considered the best value for money option in this price range.
