Apple iPhone 4

iPhone 4

The iPhone 4 features Apple’s new retina display which, according to Apple, is sandwiched between two sheets of aluminoscilicate glass (supposedly 30 times harder than plastic). The name comes from the resolution being at the perfect level for the human eye to not detect pixels (326dpi). Apple’s marketing aside, the screen really is amazing and absolutely no mobile phone comes close to the seemingly perfect retina display – barring perhaps Samsung’s Super AMOLED.

The new iPhone is still limited in capacity and comes in only two sizes: 16GB and 32GB. There is still no expansion slot for additional storage. Connectivity comes in the form of 7.2Mbps HSDPA, WiFi (b,g,n), Bluetooth and Apple’s proprietary USB cable. The iPhone 4 comes with two cameras; a front facing camera for use with video calling and 5 megapixel primary camera which is equipped with autofocus and an LED flash. Battery life is average for a smart phone (in other words, by the end of a hardworking day the battery will need charging).

The much publicised “death grip” issue is very much alive and kicking and requires a protective bumper to be put over the phone. This will prevent people from inadvertently covering the external antenna specifically on the left-hand corner. This might reek of design apathy but with the bumper in place this becomes a non-issue, especially as you reach the upper echelons of Jobs-ism.

The iPhone 4 is a smart phone that even a child can use. The menu system is simple and elegant while the onscreen keyboard is perfect. Apple has spent a lot of time in R&D and it shows (apart from that death grip issue we’ve already discussed). The iPhone 4 is not the best smart phone on the market but it’s a hair’s breadth away from being so. It’s fast, easy-to-use and has an app store that’s bursting at the seams, provided of course you fake your address or get hold of vouchers.
