And next up, the Android console. Meet Ouya

Ouya Head

Just when you thought you owned every current console, along comes Yves Behar, the designer behind the One Laptop Per Child initiative, and the development of an Android console. Called Ouya, the console is being developed by Behar and several other industry names. The best part? All of the games released for it will supposedly be free-to-play. The worst? It probably won’t make it to retail in South Africa any time soon.

Any developer will be able to publish games, claims the listing, and all games will be free to play.”

That sounds pretty sweet to us. The console was first spotted by The Verge and it will, on release, cost a paltry $99 (about R810 at today’s exchange rates). It’s not just a console though. It will be designed to be modded and every person who gets one will also get their hands on a dev kit for it, according to reports.

There’s not much other info on it and the games that might be published haven’t even been hinted at but still… an Android console would make for an interesting entrant into the living room. We’ll let you know most as this one develops.

G3AR's Online Editor (Ninja Edition) and scourge of all the writers on the website. I spend almost as much time gaming as I do reading (that's saying something), so there is little time for sleep. Don't play MMOs because I'd never get anything done, ever.

Read about this earlier. Sound cool, maybe a replacement media server/console/freeTV via proxy etc :-)

Free to play huh? I guess that I won’t expect AAA games on this console.

This will pretty much become an indie box, great platform to launch and get noticed on. Also a GREAT media replacment box.

Seems to have no optical media either. So I assume download and USB only?

Oh cool, think this type of console could work quite well here. free to play is always a winner. For emerging developers this is quite cool

An Android box? Soooo… a box with a slot for a sim card and have its own internet connectivity? Mmmm…. I think its quite a novel idea.
