Epic thinks Xbox 720 and PS4 specs are too weak

next-generation

It’s no secret that Epic Games have been very hard at work on the next Unreal Engine, simply named Unreal Engine 4 at this point, but they don’t seem to positive where the next generation of consoles are heading in regards to specs. In an interview with Wired Magazine Epic had this to say:

It is up to Epic, and Tim Sweeney in particular, to motivate Sony and Microsoft not to phone in what these next consoles are going to be. It needs to be a quantum leap. They need to damn near render Avatar in real time, because I want it and gamers want it—even if they don’t know they want it.”

Rumours are suggesting that what they’ve seen of next generation does not supply that exciting quantum leap that every new console generation should bring along with it. Then again, the Xbox 360 at first was not a massive jump from the already impressive Xbox when it launched in December 2005. Look at it now.

Married to a gamer wife who kicks my ass at most shooters I don't take myself very serious. Mario, Kratos, Master Chief, Modern, Retro, Arcade - I live for games, it's as simple as that.

If you take the current level ‘ps4/720′ specs (rumored) they are basically entry level PC’s.

In 2 years time they will be 3 years behind entry level PC’s and if 5 they will be considered ancient!

When the 360 and PS3 launched, they where 2 years ahead of a affordable gaming PC, so these new systems will have to be off the hook insane specs to stay in the running for 5-8 years.

Really interested in seeing what the next gen consoles can do, but hoping that they doent just revise the current hardware just to get new products out into the market. I will probably wait for a year before I upgrade to a PS4 just to see how they do it and wait for a “slim” version.

@janrik – What feaks me out is that consoles (6years old) can still play the newest games at very good graphics while a pc that is 6 years old would lag like a dog without legs. That is why I migrated to consoles cause upgrading a pc just for gaming sucks. :-)

I’m in the same boat, just got tired of buying new pc parts & upgrading every year, I’m very happy with my console(xbox360), I actually want new games that have innovation, not FPS, RPG etc over & over & over….create something new please, not just gfx

I wonder how close these rumoured specs really are.
But yes I wonder if Cliffy just wants these machines that are just short of sentient for us to game on.

Its a shame that the next gen console’s will represent a massive leap as the 360 and ps3.However Sony and Microsoft have lost 10 billion dollars on consoles .So raiding the budget bins is an understandable decision

Well its based on rumors. The PS4 nor the next Xbox have not even been announced yet. For all we know these consoles could be made with the latest and more powerful parts. So let’s just wait and see what their specs will be.

Obviously these are based on rumours but am I the only one that thinks this is cause for concern?
