Honourable Mentions: Lara Croft is usually in a list of this sort, but her disproportionate looks do not appeal quite as much as they used to, leading to a re-imagining of her character for the Tomb Raider title due this year. All the Final Fantasy women could have made the list, as could Bayonetta, Jill Valentine, Alyx Vance and a whole bunch of others. There are too many to mention, but what follows are ten of the ladies that have stolen their way into gamers’ hearts for one reason or another.
10. Rubi Malone – Wet
Rubi Malone may not appear the world’s greatest game but having her based on actress Elisha Duzku the main protagonist made playing the game just a little more appealing. Wielding dual guns and sliding around in slow motion in those leather pants made it worthwhile.
9. Nariko – Heavenly Sword
Red hair and beautiful are words that don’t often go together in a single sentence, unless they are accompanied by ‘not’ (You might want a running start when Mike reads this – Brett). That being said, Nariko from Heavenly Sword (accompanied by her free flowing red hair) is a beauty. Not only is she beautiful but she is in possession of the Heavenly Sword. With her spirit and unquestionable morals, not many would complain about her saving their people, even if she is a bit different.
8. Catwoman – Batman: Arkham City
She wears all leather, carries around a whip and purrs like a kitty. Is anything else really needed to be said about Selina Kyle? Okay, she also kicks some serious ass in Arkham City and is the only person in the world of gaming and comics who can get to Batman consistently.
7. Naomi Hunter – MGS
Naomi isn’t just a pretty face. She is intelligent, strategic and also prepared to put up with Snake and his complaining. Naomi is just one of those women who leave a lasting impression even if she weren’t to say a single world. Sometimes the beauty is all about that brain.
6. Samus Aran – Metroid
One of the biggest twists in gaming history is when Samus is finally revealed as a woman in the Metroid series, much to the delight of geeks and nerds everywhere. Samus entered the hearts of all gamers with her take-no-prisoners approach to the galactic warfare she finds herself in. In addition, Zero Suit Samus would win any war ever without even needing the guns.
5. Princess Farah – Prince of Persia
The gaming world is full of princesses. Peach from the Mario series, Zelda from… well, Zelda and both have a cuteness factor to consider. The only one really worth taking home though is Farah from Prince of Persia. Those looks she gives the Prince throughout the game are part of it, not to mention the, obvious… bits. Princess Farah can also take care of herself pretty well and won’t need saving from too many castles.
4. Jade – Beyond Good and Evil
Okay, Jade isn’t your typical sexy leading female protagonist. In fact she was created by Michel Ancel to be a completely different kind of sexy in that she resembles a ‘real person’. Her traits make her more appealing than just about anything else found in female characters. Some might see her as plain, but it the fact that she is almost ordinary makes her stand out.
3. Chloe Frazer – Uncharted
Chloe is one of the two ladies from the Uncharted series. The dark haired Brit who steals Nate’s heart in Uncharted 2 is all kinds of beautiful. That stern look on her face and her sense of adventure make her a character that resonates with viewers/players. She is definitely the assertive type, but we aren’t complaining.
2. Elena Fisher – Uncharted
The question of who is preferred between Chloe and Elena is put forward about as many times as Nate shouts “oh crap” in the games. This is not an easy choice for the guy and who can blame him. The fact that Elena was ‘here first’ means that she worked her way into our hearts a little bit before Chloe. Again, a wild sense of adventure and her ability to really charm her way through events makes her a fan favourite.
1. Miranda Lawson – Mass Effect 2 and 3
Hands up if Miranda accompanied you on every mission in Mass Effect 2. Her accent, attire and general attitude make her one of the greatest female characters in recent days. She has been genetically engineered to be perfect in just about every way possible and if her good looks aren’t enough she also takes no prisoners on the battlefield. Miranda may have some trust issues and may be difficult to trust in turn, but she is a character who sneaks into our minds whenever a decision needs to be made. Saving the world with Miranda at your side is just that tiny bit better, isn’t it?
