Anonymous “will shut the Internet down”

Anon Internet Head

If you can read this then the internet is still working. Or maybe it is a matter of time zones. Anonymous have reportedly claimed that they “will shut the Internet down” today, by attacking the 13 root DNS servers that support most of the internet. The message was posted to Pastebin and details exactly how they plan to temporarily shut down most of the internet.

The message also states why they are planning to do this:

To protest SOPA, Wallstreet, our irresponsible leaders and the beloved bankers who are starving the world for their own selfish needs out of sheer sadistic fun, On March 31, anonymous will shut the Internet down…

Remember, this is a protest, we are not trying to ‘kill’ the Internet, we are only temporarily shutting it down where it hurts the most. While some ISPs uses DNS caching, most are configured to use a low expire time for the cache, thus not being a valid failover solution in the case the root servers are down. It is mostly used for speed, not redundancy.”

They claim that the internet may be shut down for anything from an hour to a few days. Whether they can actually pull this off is uncertain but if you suddenly have no access to anything online at some point today Anonymous is probably involved.

G3AR's Online Editor (Ninja Edition) and scourge of all the writers on the website. I spend almost as much time gaming as I do reading (that's saying something), so there is little time for sleep. Don't play MMOs because I'd never get anything done, ever.

I would say something, but out of fear of HAX0R1ing… I shall just say “Oh, Anonymous.”
