This is a new one, an artificial intelligence (AI) creating video games. The brainchild of PhD student Michael Cook, Angelina (A Novel Game-Evolving Labrat I’ve Named ANGELINA) is designed to create playable video games. There is no need to worry however, the AI won’t be producing the likes of Mass Effect, The Darkness or even Gears of War anytime soon. When it starts producing better titles than people can, then you can worry.
The AI is far from complete and still requires human intervention at certain points. Angelina is unable to render graphics or insert music so a human programmer is needed to follow the design specifications she comes up with. The artificial intelligence goes through several steps when creating a game, first creating a playing area, laying out that area and defining rules for the game. It then simulates 400 playthroughs of the game, essentially performing its own QA (quality assurance). Fixes are made on the basis of the results and, provided the game works, there is eventually a new game.
The created titles are not terribly complicated (or long) but you can check them out here.

AI producing AI? Didn’t Vinge predict something along those lines…?
