Earlier this year a member of Anonymous managed to get into a conference call with the FBI and UK law enforcement officials, a call that they recorded and later leaked. As the FBI promised the hacker has been caught and details on how the hack was performed have come to light.
The young hacker who penetrated the conference call, who has been identified as 19-year-old Donncha O’Cearrbhail, has been arrested for the breach as part of a larger operation that was made possible when the FBI caught and turned LulzSec leader ‘Sabu’ (28-year-old Hector Xavier Monsegur, from New York). Several other Anonymous and LulzSec members have been arrested for various hacks according to the FBI.
The FBI also detailed how the young hacker got access the the conference call that was released in early February.
In January 2012, O’CEARRBHAIL hacked into the personal e-mail account of an officer with Ireland’s national police service, the An Garda Siochana (the “Garda”). Because the Garda officer had forwarded work e-mails to a personal account, O’CEARRBHAIL learned information about how to access a conference call that the Garda, the FBI, and other law enforcement agencies were planning to hold on January 17, 2012 regarding international investigations of Anonymous and other hacking groups. O’CEARRBHAIL then accessed and secretly recorded the January 17 international law enforcement conference call, and then disseminated the illegally-obtained recording to others.”
