According to a GamesBeat report a copy of the PC version of Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 has escaped and has been doing the rounds online. Escaped may be the wrong term, it was apparently given some assistance by an employee at an unnamed shipping company in California. Only the second disc was jacked, reportedly containing the files for the single player portion of the game.
Activision are not taking this lying down it seems and are supposedly knocking on doors and asking folks to turn over or delete the pirated files. How they are locating these people is uncertain but the visits may be related to pirates selling copies of the stolen software online, getting busted and turning over details to Acti. People who have been approached by Activision investigators have reportedly complied rather than face a fine. Most of them, anyway.
GamesBeat also reports that a pirate who was nabbed posted on Craigslist telling people not to buy pirated copies of MW3 online or “they will come get you…(everywhere)“. Said pirate was apparently caught, fined $5,000 and perma-banned from playing online.
